My Top Lending Moment: Saving Money for Military Veterans

As a continuation of our “My Top Lending Moment” series, TJ Barker, Branch Manager of our Bel Air, MD office, shares the touching story of how he helped his clients who are military Veterans get approved for a mortgage loan and close on their home.

As a loan officer, closing day is one of the most exciting parts of my job. Helping my clients finance their dream homes is what makes me want to come into work every day. Combine that with my passion for serving Veterans in the Bel Air area, and you’ll know why this is one of my top lending moments at Ross Mortgage.

Nothing is better than helping a military Veteran get into a home, except for helping two at the same time! The couple I assisted were Marine and Air Force Veterans looking for a home to raise their family in. With the VA loan, we were able to utilize flexible credit requirements to get this family into their forever home.

Due to various circumstances, this was not a cookie cutter VA loan by any means, and it did have its challenges. However, we were able to get through obstacles thrown our way and do right by our clients.

Days before the loan was set to close, we found a way to save our clients close to $3,000 cash. The Ross Mortgage team got to work, updated the loan, got everything approved and sent the money and documents to the title company. This would not have been possible without our in-house underwriting and processing team!

While doing extra work to put our clients into a better position financially wasn’t easy, everyone on my team sprang into action to ensure our customers were satisfied and well taken care of. At Ross Mortgage, we always make it a priority to do what’s right and best for our clients, and I’m proud to say I work for a company with those values.

One thing you should know about me is that I pride myself in closing on time. With these clients, I missed our closing time by two hours. Not two days, two hours. While I would never want to intentionally inconvenience my clients, other parties involved and industry partners, I also couldn’t pass up an opportunity to save this couple thousands of dollars on their loan.

For me, being able to exceed the expectations of two people who served our country was worth every minute of those two hours. I’m proud of the hard work my team put in to provide our clients with quality service and a happy ending. After closing, the clients said this was the least stressful purchase they’ve ever made. What could be better than that?

The fact that we helped two Veterans and their family buy their forever home where they can raise their children and watch their grandchildren grow was priceless. Turning these unique obstacles into positive situations is what makes long nights and hard work worth it.

If you’d like to learn more about our work with Veterans and our VA loan options, send us a message. We’d be happy to put you in touch with one of our VA loan experts.

I called Ashley with Ross Mortgage cause I was wanting to buy a house. She answered all of my questions and immediately started working on the process. I started the process in April and by June 28, we closed on the house. I would recommend Ashley and her team to anyone who is looking to purchase a home.
