Holiday Decorations: Your Ultimate DIY Guide

on
December 5, 2013

I don’t know about you, but I love decorating my home for the holidays! My favorite Christmas was the year our family celebrated an “old-fashioned Christmas.”  We went to our vacation house in northern Michigan, cut down our own tree and made all of the ornaments by hand. Here are my tips on how to make your own holiday decorations:

Use nature as inspiration. There are plenty of ways you can use nature to create your own holiday decorations. Instead of buying an expensive wreath to adorn your front door, gather branches, twigs and greenery from your backyard and make your own. To add a personal touch to your wreath, embellish it with your favorite accessories.

Make your own ornaments. Gather pinecones and acorns from your backyard to make ornaments that give your tree natural appeal. To make the acorn ornament pictured below, simply remove the caps of acorns and glue them to a Styrofoam ball. If you want to add some pizzazz to your ornaments, sprinkle them with gold or silver glitter and place a festive bow on top.

Create a centerpiece for your dining room table. Are you planning on having guests over for dinner this holiday season? Make a statement with this classic centerpiece made of pine tree branches and pinecones. Place cinnamon-scented candles along the length of the table to create a candlelit dining experience.

Use common household items. Take a look around your house. I’m sure there are plenty of items you can use to make your own homemade ornaments, including buttons, thumbtacks and cookie cutters, just to name a few.

Get the kids involved. Get the kids involved in the holiday decorating fun. Not only will you have fun making ornaments together, you’ll be making warm memories too. I used to love making salt dough ornaments with my kids. Similar to making Christmas cookies, you can use cookie cutters to create ornaments out of the salt dough.

By repurposing things found in nature or around the house, you can add some holiday cheer to your home without spending a lot on decorations.
