Holiday Traditions That Make Us Feel Warm & Cozy

There’s something about the holidays that makes everything merry and bright. Whether it’s the joy of spending time with family, giving back to those in need or continuing a family tradition, everyone has something that makes them feel warm and cozy during the holidays.

We asked some of our blog authors what their favorite holiday traditions were, and here’s what they had to say:

I love the holidays! Everything from the fresh smell of Christmas tree when I walk in the house to the late night drives my family and I take to look at lights and decorations. One of my favorite things to do with my family this time of year is decorate our Christmas tree. We have lots of ornaments, and they all bring back memories of Christmas past. Each year, we also host a cookie decorating party for my kids and their cousins. It’s a blast!

The holidays are all about spreading Christmas cheer, donating to charities and being there for as many people as possible by volunteering your time and helping others. I’m Italian, so the biggest tradition we have on Christmas is instead of eating Turkey or Ham, we have homemade ravioli. Yum! When we’re not busy enjoying homemade Italian cooking, we enjoy listening to our favorite Christmas songs.

I am Jewish, so my family celebrates Hanukkah this time of year. My favorite holiday tradition is gathering the family around the menorah to light a candle every night during Hanukkah and eating latkes and kugels. It brings back memories of when I was a child. Getting together with my family and watching my children interact with their elders is always heartwarming. I also try to keep the holiday spirit of giving alive whether there is a holiday or not, by making donations to multiple charities throughout the year.

I always feel warm and fuzzy when I volunteer my time or buy gifts for those who are less fortunate—that’s what the holidays are all about for me. December tends to be the least busy month of the year, so I try to spend as much time as possible with my friends and family this time of year. I always keep my door open for friends and family who may not have a place to go for Christmas and invite them over to my house for a big dinner. One of the most memorable Christmases I had was the year our family had an “old-fashioned” Christmas. We went to our vacation house in northern Michigan, cut down our own tree and made all of the ornaments by hand.

My kids are at the perfect age where my wife and I get to make Christmas magical for them. The thing I enjoy most about the holidays is being able to spend time (without distraction) with my wife and kids. During the holidays, I try to spread holiday cheer by remembering that little acts of kindness can go a long way, like holding the door open for others or leaving a generous tip at restaurants. My favorite holiday tradition was passed down from my mother. Each year, we make a Christmas morning casserole and it’s special because we only make it once a year.
